"Jcarr" (jcarr)

I use an external hard drive extensively at work. Recently I switched from a 5-year-old WD Passport 1TB to a brand new Toshiba Canvio 2TB. I’ve noticed a significant difference in response time between old and new when I go to access it after it sitting for a bit.
Old and fast.
The Passport would respond right away to me clicking on any particular folder. The Canvio feels like it has to wake up and think for a few seconds before it lets me into a folder I haven’t just been in.
New and slow.
Both are USB 3.0 and plugged into a USB 3.0 compatible port on my laptop.
It’s a very minor inconvenience, but I was just curious why the newer one would be slower to react.
EDIT: I think it’s a [stupid] power saving issue. I still have the old Passport so I plugged it in and let it sit for a while. Even after sitting, I can still feel it humming away, while the Canvio is perfectly still until I try to open something.

Because the Canvio is a piece of shit, that’s why. EnergyStar bullshittery. I have the same problem with my Canvio (thank gof I got it for free) and it’s atrocious.

Without looking up the specs it sounds like a read/write issue. The new one may have slower response times, but I wouldn’t expect that to be the case for something new vs something 5 years old.

Did you install the Toshiba Canvio software?

I think Nibbles may have gotten it. I have a 6 month old Passport 1TB at home for personal use and it’s plenty quick. Must be the Canvio’s design.

I didn’t, I just plugged it in, waited for it to be recognized, and started transferring.
Probably can’t install now without wiping all of my data, huh?

Might you have downgraded your disk rpm?

Ditto-ing that! Toshiba is a hit or miss when it comes to hardware. Either they’re pretty decent, or absolute trash. I’ve never had any issues with a Western Digital device. But of course, your mileage may always vary.
The other note I’d make is perhaps your computer doesn’t like the drivers?

Off topic here Nibby (sort of), but you could make a recommendation for me I’m sure. I’ve got a flaky software RAID set up using two Seagate 4TB drives (the RAID keeps self unmounting). I set this up after my last 3TB Seagate took a dump and ate a whole bunch of photos. Anyway, I want/need to set up a new software RAID, and I’m looking for hardware recommendations. My goal is to have redundant backup using TimeMachine on my iMac (OS 10.9.5, probably going to 10.10 soon). Anybody else is welcome to chime in here, too. Thanks.

It’s likely because it spins down to save power. Better solution would be grab a usb3 enclosure and a decent hard drive. I’ve been getting 2tb enterprise drives for about 100$.

1: I’m not Nibby
2: My backup is that piece of shit Canvio I’ve been going on about so I’m probably not the best to ask about personal RAIDs and such, but I’ve been eyeing this for a while to get a real backup solution in the house.

Happens to the best of us. Easy to confuse folks when all we have is a handle.

How you been, anyway? Strumming much lately? I recall you were having an issue with neuropathy or something.

No, I wouldn’t install it anyway. The USB3 controller is a bit sub-par (I have many Canvio drives). Not about to disagree with you on it’s quality. The third party software often börks things worse.

I’ve been doing a lot of PT. My right hand is fine now and I’ve regained most of the feeling in my left. I keep staring longingly at my axes but have been told that it’s probably not the best thing just yet. Yesterday I found a ruby Rickenbacker 4003s bass that I want to buy. I just have to stay patient and keep doing my therapies and I’m sure I’ll be playing again soon :)

Good to hear, keep at it brother. I decided to gut my ‘93 Strat and do a hardware/electronics rebuild. Got a new nut and string trees installed so far and a new wiring/pot/switch kit in the wings. Just waiting to have enough me-cash to drop on a new pickguard and a set of single-coils.

I wouldn’t have brought it up except you’re the third this week to confuse the two of us :)
